WebP supports transparency (both lossy and lossless). If your source has alpha, WebP → PNG is the right conversion.
WebP modes
- **Lossy WebP** — like JPG, no transparency usually
- **Lossless WebP** — like PNG, supports alpha
Which PNG to export
- **PNG-24** — full color + alpha (default)
- **PNG-8** — 256 colors, tiny files (for icons)
Why convert
- Older Photoshop versions don't open WebP
- Some design tools reject WebP uploads
- Email clients don't render WebP reliably
- Print workflows require PNG or TIFF
