Pixelation is the classic privacy filter — but only if done right. Gaussian blur can be reversed; aggressive pixelation cannot.
How to pixelate safely
- Upload the image
- Drag a rectangle over the sensitive area
- Set the pixel block size — **larger is safer**
- Export as JPEG (not PNG — PNG compression can preserve detail)
Pixel size guide
- **5–10px** — soft privacy (mild info leak risk)
- **15–25px** — strong privacy (recommended)
- **30px+** — irreversible
When to pixelate
- Blurring faces in photos
- Hiding license plates
- Redacting ID numbers
- Obscuring passwords on screenshots
- Anonymizing children in public photos
Not the same as redaction
If you need court-grade redaction, use our PDF redaction tool. Pixelation is for images.
Warning
Screenshot + zoom can defeat weak pixelation. Use the largest block size that doesn't ruin the image.
